Santa Maria delle Grazie

The Church of "Santa Maria delle Grazie" is located on the Martyrs Square in Procida. The church was built in 1679 by the Archbishop Innico Caracciolo, although, on this place, there was already a small chapel for the worship of Our Lady of Grace (people called the square Semmarezìo, Santa Maria). The church, built in baroque style with a Greek cross plan, presents an entrance, surmounted by the choir, where on the left you can see the sacristy, decorated with elegant cabinets, made of rich walnut, and valuable paintings of the XVIII century Neapolitan school depicting the Immaculate wih Saint Lucia and Saint Gaetano of Thiene. The interior is embellished with floral designs and on the bottom of the central altar you can admire the canvas of Madonna delle Grazie, enriched with gold and silver in 1854 by the will of the inhabitants of the island, to thank the Virgin for the miracle of having freed Procida from the plague. The building is a Marian sanctuary since the summer of 1924 and is open daily.
