Santa Maria delle Grazie
The Church of the Madonna delle Grazie is located in the Piazza dei Martiri in Procida and you meet it on the left, coming down from Terra Murata.
Overlooking the Corricella, it was built in 1679 at the behest of Archbishop Innico Caracciolo, on a pre-existing chapel dedicated to the cult of the Madonna delle Grazie. This is why the square, a real balcony from which to see a breathtaking view of the sea, Corricella and Terra Murata, was formerly called Semmarezio, Santa Maria, precisely. The Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, built in Baroque style with a Greek cross plan, has the entrance dominated by the choir, while on the left it is possible to see the sacristy, furnished with fine walnut cabinets rich in inlays and a precious painting by Eighteenth century of the Neapolitan school depicting the Immaculate Conception with Saint Lucia and Saint Cajetan of Tiene.
The interior is embellished with floral designs and eighteenth-century stuccoes and on the bottom, on the central altar, it is possible to admire a canvas representing the Madonna delle Grazie, enriched with gold and silver in 1854 at the behest of the inhabitants of the island , to thank the Virgin for the miracle of having freed Procida from the plague. The building is characterized by 4 other altars in addition to the main one, dedicated to San Giuseppe, Santa Maria Goretti, San Francesco d'Assisi and Our Lady of Sorrows. Marian sanctuary since the summer of 1924, the church is open every day.
